Importance of Plumbing
Ancient Romans enjoyed their plumbing with the aqueducts built to feed water to homes for drinking and bathing, and to carry wastes into sewers, separating the wastes from fresh water supplies.
Plumbing industry started growing fast in the 19th century with the need for clean water and collection and transportation of wastes in modern cities. Wastes used to be dumped into ground or a river. Nowadays pipes are used to carry wastes to treatment plants where the water is purified and released into environment.
Cold and hot water supplies in our home are built by plumbers. Everyday we use water for cooking, washing, watering plants, cleaning driveway. Thanks to our plumbers, we have clean water whenever we need it by just turning on the tap, without thinking much about plumbing.
Not everyone can enjoy having clean water as we do. In many developing countries, especially in remote areas, people still have to carry water a long way from rivers and streams to their home.
Plumbers are skilled tradesmen and required to hold license, because plumbing has direct impact on the public's health, safety and welfare. Plumbers have to complete their training and apprenticeship to gain their license.

Plumbing Advice
- Lime-scale build up may be the cause of poor water pressure in your shower. If you live in a hard water area you should clean your shower heads every three months or so. You may install either a new hose, or a new shower head if scale is too bad.
- Instead of using harsh chemicals, white vinegar can be flushed through the pipes. White vinegar is an excellent alternative to strong chemicals for dissolving the calcium build up, and it is environment-friendly.
- Prevention is better than cure. Scalding water can clear drains of grease. Install a strainer in kitchen and bathroom sinks to prevent hair, soap, and small objects from slipping down the drains.
- Put some food coloring in your cistern if you suspect it is leaking.
- If your pipe has split, a temporary fix you can do while waiting for a qualified plumber is to wrap torn strips of fabric very tightly around the break. Put a large saucepan or bucket underneath the join to catch any drips.
- If you want to remove stains on your bathtub, try using soda. Pour some soda on the stain and use your scrub brush to clean the stain.
- Placing a drain guard over your bathtub drain is the easiest way to prevent hair blockage. Use one with very small holes to stop hair going into the drains. Remember to pick up bunch of hair at the end of having bath or shower.
